SuperMan Is Dead
ONE OF THE GREATEST MINDS IN CREATIVE P.R.
Speechless. That’s how many people felt after seeing one of the most innovative P.R. drops in years. Award-winning editor and publicist, Calynn Lawrence just released a project on her blog called “Superman Is Dead” and a lot of people are feeling either moved, empowered, shocked or a combination of all three. We’re gonna say we felt all three. If you haven’t seen the project, go check it out now at this link: http://fashionthunderclap.blogspot.com/2018/01/superman-is-dead.html
How do you even introduce something like this? It’s hard because in recent times something like this hasn’t been done…On the flipside, it should be easy because recently nothing like this has been done. Here’s what we’ll go with: “Superman Is Dead” is a spoken word poem along with a series of photographs with the creator, Calynn Lawrence, portraying an array of emotions centered around a man who we only know as “Superman.” A previous romantic interest, she uses her words and her thought-provoking imagery to FORCE her audience to feel how she felt when she had to lay Superman to rest, figuratively speaking.
Her creative direction with the photos is amazing, having captured so many feelings bound up within her. For example, her photo sitting on the floor with Superman cape draped over almost her entire body, tight in her grasp could portray how he figuratively took over her almost entirely. Or it could be meant to show us a sense of dependency that she once felt, holding on to his cape and laying under it as some type of security blanket.
Another image that was very powerful was where she is standing in front of a door, under an awning in all black, fiercely spreading her cape.
You could take that as her spreading her wings, symbolizing this new found liberty and valiance. Or you could take it to represent her dark side peeking through, referenced in her lyrics. She evolved from an angry damsel dressed in baby pink to an edgy baddie adorned in all black. And now, she’s got her own cape, no need to hold onto his anymore.
As if those sickening images weren’t enough, she hit us twice with even more impactful lyrics and we enjoyed every syllable. You can tell the amount of thought that went into writing this, from the back to back character references, equating the blows with the powers of each character, to her crazy use of slant rhyme using both English and Spanish language (Yes Sis, she’s bilingual too!), to the undying passion behind every stanza. Read a few of these quotes and you’ll see what we mean:
“How’d he sleep on a legend? not even a myth, iconic
Didn’t he know she was Supergirl? Beyond Bionic
Hard lesson to swallow, but she took it straight, no Tonic
Her silence says it all, no words, Non-sonic
At least now they on the same page, in sync, Harmonic”
“Runnin’ his mouth like sports, Quicksilver, rapido
Almost became her nemesis like Ultron and Black Widow
Triggered her beast mode, Elektra, codigo rojo”
“What once was her subordination, employee
Became “I’m the boss, you the son. Yo take lo que te doy, G.”
We’ll say it one more time so you understand us. She is undoubtedly one of the greatest minds in creative P.R. The way one woman, a young woman at that, could conceptualize, direct and release such a project within a couple weeks in the midst of being crushed by some obviously lucky man is some real boss ish. And we not only respect her for it but we praise her. Claps to you Ms. Lawrence, we’re glad Supergirl is back! She’s way badder than Lois Lane anyway.
