Hey, ladies and gents!! JaHaira B checking in on my Valid Readers, I bet a lot of you are wondering what my hair journey is looking like right now? How long does your hair take to loc? What should I expect along the process and products do I use ? I’ve put together a list of tips for anyone who maybe considering free form locing their hair . Before getting to my tips, let me explain what is free forming dreads. Free Form dreads are locs that grow naturally out of your roots/head with ZERO to little maintenance, hair sections form on their own as well as the form in which your hair takes its own shape, length, and thickness, think of your dreads as your own DNA no two are alike. Now that we have an idea of what free forming is, let’s move on to the tips.
Tip number 1: Let your hair BE!!!
( less manipulation easier the process, weighing your hair down with heavy oils, creams, gels, etc can result in unnecessary built up, again I do what works for me! Listen to YOUR hair and it’s needs)
Tip number 2: Have patience!!! Think of your hair like a beautiful plant… you must water and care for.
(Patience is key in this process )
Tip number 3: Trust your process!!!
( No hair is alike, and it is nice to seek inspirational photos but keep in mind everyone dreads are different and will grow differently as well )
Tip number 4: Keep it clean and expect SHRINKAGE !!
( To the contrary of many beliefs dreads are clean, please do your research before you make any commitments, I myself spent years thinking of what some called to my individuality. Shrinkage! , the word we hate to hear but let’s face it shrinkage has some good benefits in textured hair, it’s a sign your hair is healthy. There are many techniques and ways to locing your hair, freeform or uninformed. )
Tip number 5: Have fun with your hair!
( Don’t be so serious!!! Embrace all the phases you may face while committing to this journey. Some days, are rougher than others but don’t beat yourself up, love your locs at any stage. You may question how they’re going to look, and in all honesty, you don’t know, you just have to let go be free and be open to the unknown with this journey, bravery has to be worn inside and out with this process!! )
I hope that I’ve helped anyone that has similar questions to what I faced at the beginning of my journey. I’m a month into my process and will follow up in about 4 months from now. I’ll throw the sneak peaks here and there but I’m very excited to let you know all about the journey in April!! Stay tune subscribe, like, comment and most importantly let love and light in
